The European and French roulette tables have a single zero section at the front, followed by 36 sections representing wheel numbers. To the right of the numbers are three sections, each indicated ‘2 to 1’. Below the numbers are three sections: 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12. Below these are six sections, namely: 1 to 18, even, red coloured, black coloured, odd and 19 to 36. The American roulette wheel has two zero sections (0, 00).

The Roulette Wheel

The roulette wheel has 36 numbers in alternating colours of red and black, high and low, odd and even and either one or two green spots with zero or double zero, respectively. The American roulette wheel has two zeros, 0 and 00, while both the French and European roulette wheels have a single zero. Both the numbers and colours and value come into play when making bets. When the roulette wheel starts spinning, the ball moves in the opposite direction. There are pockets on each of the numbers where the ball may come to a stop. The casino makes payments depending on the number where the ball comes to a stop.

Roulette numbers

There are 36 numbers and a 0 or 00 depending on which wheel you are playing on.

On a French/European wheel with only one zero, the numbers alternate between red and black colours and high and low numbers (apart from 5 and 10) in this order, a total of 37 numbers.

Roulette Bets

There are many different types of roulette bets but they can be simplified by dividing them into inside bets and outside bets. The outside bets (bets on the outer of the layout) are wagers placed on a group of numbers rather than particular numbers. These bets are also known as even money bets and 2 to 1 bets. Inside Bets

Inside bets are placed in the centre of the table’s layout on individual numbers or on specific combinations of numbers. Inside bets include:

Straight up:
To place a bet on a single number that you expect to win. The straight bet pays 35:1
Split:
A bet on the line separating any two numbers on the table. You win if either of the numbers wins. This bet pays 17:1.
Street:
In the bet, you choose a line of three numbers that you expect to include the winning number. If the winning number is one of them, you get paid 11:1.
Corner:
A corner bet takes into account the four numbers that share the said corner on the table. If the winning number is one of them, you get an 8:1 payout.
Six Line bet:
This covers two rows of three numbers (six numbers) and pays 5:1
Five-number bet:
You bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. It pays 6:1
First Four or Basket:
You bet on 0, 1, 2, 3, and pays 6:1 if any wins

Roulette Section Bets

Section bets are bets placed when playing with a French roulette wheel. Rather than placing bets on individual numbers, players place bets on the ball landing in a particular section of the wheel. Section bets can be placed as individual bets on the numbers of the roulette layout or on the Racetrack on the roulette layout. The racetrack is a copy of the numbers on the wheel with the various sections on the inner part of the track.

Tier bets are also known as Tiers du Cylidre. Tier covers one-third of the French roulette wheel. This is a 6 piece bet, where a chip covers two numbers as explained below:

  • One chip for the 5/8 split
  • A chip for the 10/11 split

  • A chip for the 23/24 split
  • One chip for the 27/30 split
  • A chip for the 33/36 split

For example, if you placed a £10 chip on each of the six splits the bet would cost £60, if any of the numbers win you would be paid £170 and retain the original bet. A total of £180. Thus tier is a 2 to 1 bet.

Voison du Zero

Voison du Zero is a 9-chip bet that covers 17 numbers, nearly half of the wheel on the roulette racetrack. It is thus the largest section bet. Here is the distribution of the chips.

Orphelins

Orphelins is a bet that takes up the smallest section in called bets as it covers eight numbers. They make up the two sections outside the voisins and tiers bets. Players use five chips to cover the following areas.

  • One chip for the 14/17 split
  • A chip for the 17/20 split
  • One chip for the 31/34 split

0 Game

This is a four chip bet. Three of the chips are used on the splits 0/3, 12/15 and 32/35. The remaining chip places a straight-up bet on 26. Punters name it a zero game because it allows you to play numbers that are closest to zero (12, 3, 35, 26, 32, 0 and 15). You can win up to 35:1 when you use this unique bet.

Neighbour Bets

This type of bet is popular with players who chase the roulette wheel’s hot and cold sections. Neighbour bets are placed on what’s known as the Racetrack on the table layout. The bet is usually a five-chip bet. You pick a number and back it up with two numbers on its right and left. Here is an example. If you go for zero and its neighbours, you will be placing your other four chips on 15, 32, 26 and 3. You win up to 35:1 if any of the numbers you have selected becomes the winning selection. As well as a 5 piece neighbour bet there are variations such as a 3 piece neighbour bet. The chosen number and one number on either side and also the 7 piece neighbour bet, the chosen number and three numbers on either side.

The Different Forms of Roulette

There are three forms of roulette: French, European and American. The difference between the three is the number of pockets and the rules that apply to each. American roulette has the highest house edge among the three. Here is a quick look at each form.

French Roulette

French roulette is played on a single zero wheel and has a close resemblance to the European game. The layout and bets are all worded in French.
